Some fires destroy nearly everything. SERVPRO of Edina/ Eden Prairie will try their best to save all we can
Have you recently experienced fire damage? Whether it was a small fire and you have smoke and soot smell, or if a fire burned a significant portion of your home or office, we can help. SERVPRO of Edina/Eden Prairie has experience tackling smoke odors, as well as repairing or rebuilding property following a fire. Our services can range from a thorough cleaning to a complete rebuild.
When our technicians arrive on site after a fire, they will begin a series of procedures and pretests to identify the type of services and level of restoration needed. Not all fires are equal, and the response to different types of smoke damage or the severity of the fire damage will be evaluated.
Pre-Testing and Job Scope for Restoration
One of the procedures that all SERVPRO technicians perform is pre-testing. During this procedure a technician will determine what furniture or contents in your home or commercial building were affected by smoke or fire damage. We will try to save as much as possible and determine what items can be cleaned and restored, rather than replaced. Just one of the ways that SERVPRO of Edina/Eden Prairie can help you after a fire.
After a Fire: Cleaning up after smoke and fire damage in the Edina/Eden Prairie Area
Damaged by a fire, this smoke and soot covered wall was cleaned by the SERVPRO of Edina/Eden Prairie team.
When a fire erupted in a residential apartment building in the Eden Prairie area of Minnesota, the local fire department responded immediately, extinguishing the fire. The fire and smoke damage displaced many families, and created a massive clean-up effort for SERVPRO.
Fire, Smoke and Soot Damage
The fire burned inside 2 units of a large apartment building, creating heavy structural damage. All told, residents from a total of 12 units were impacted and suddenly without a home. The fire and smoke damage was present throughout nearly all of the units adjacent to where the fire took place. There was also water inside several apartments from the fire department’s response, coupled with smoke smell and soot covering the walkways and stairwells, making the entire building uninhabitable for residents. After this fire took place, SERVPRO was called to assist in the immediate cleanup and mitigation from the fire damaged structure.
Cleaning Smoke and Soot Damage
The fire created structural damage in two units, but heavy smoke damage and soot covered walls, furniture and personal belongings in many of the adjoining units. Outside of the living areas, the signs of fire were found throughout the building. Smoke and soot damage covered brick walls up and down staircases. As part of the cleanup, SERVPRO was called in to clean the charred walls and restore the appearance of the building. Using a combination of commercial cleaning materials and steam cleaning, SERVPRO crews performed a thorough cleaning of all the damaged segments of the brick walls, removing all traces of the smoke and soot damage, making the brick and the fire damage “Like it never even happened.”
Edina Smoke and Soot Cleanup
Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Edina Home.
Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.
Smoke and soot facts:
- Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
- Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
- The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.
Different Types of Smoke
There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Edina/Eden Prairie will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:
Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber
- Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood
- Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
- Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
